Tomorrow’s Capitalism Forum 2021

1pm – 5.15pm, 23 June

Online

In 2020, Volans concluded the first phase of the Tomorrow’s Capitalism Inquiry. A key conclusion was that the most important work to be done to enable the transformations we need is at the intersections between companies, financial markets and public policy.

The 2021 Forum will convene conversations that cross boundaries – between investors targeting net zero, companies in transition, and those rethinking the rules of the game at a global level.

Agenda

All times in British Summer Time

13:00 Welcome

13:15 Investor Stewardship meets Corporate Strategy

More and more investors are asking their portfolio companies to set net zero strategies. More and more companies are trying to step up to the challenge. So how does a company with a difficult transition ahead of it take its investors with it? And how can investors best hold corporate management teams accountable for delivering a rapid and just transition?

Neste CEO Peter Vanacker will be in conversation with Catherine Howarth, CEO of ShareAction, a pioneer of shareholder activism on climate strategy.

14:00 Sustainability meets Finance

Sustainability strategy is increasingly on the radar of CEOs and CFOs. Some investors are asking tougher questions about companies’ transition plans than ever before. But not all investors are on the same page: some activist hedge funds appear to see strong sustainability credentials as an invitation to attack.

In this session, we’ll hear from José Manuel Entrecanales Group CEO of Acciona, a global infrastructure company headquartered in Spain, and Mark Desjardine, Associate Professor at Penn State University who specializes in hedge fund activism.

15:15 Mobilising Money to Create Impact

Trillions of dollars a year are needed to finance innovation that reduces net GHG emissions. Raising the capital at the necessary scale is one challenge; targeting it to where it’s really needed (eg., hard-to-abate sectors and emerging markets) is another.

This session will feature Colin Le Duc, a Founding Partner of Generation Investment Management and Just Climate, alongside Dr Amal-Lee Amin, Director of Climate Strategy at CDC, and Gustavo Montezano, President of BNDES, Brazil’s national development bank.

16:00 Rewriting the Rules

As the Bretton Woods Agreement approaches its 80th birthday, a paradigm shift for the way financial markets are governed is approaching. In this final session, we’ll explore how the institutional architecture designed at Bretton Woods in 1944 can be adapted to meet the challenges of the 21st century – above all the climate crisis.

Featuring Steve Waygood, Chief Responsible Investment Officer at Aviva Investors, Jamie Sawyer, Lawyer at ClientEarth and James Vaccaro, Executive Director of the Climate Safe Lending Network.
